Life Is What You Make It Review & Summary

Summary:
Life is What You Make it is about Ankita who hails from Cochin, Kerala and her progression from adolescence to womanhood. A headstrong girl, set out to achieve everything she can dream of, reflects the aspiration driven youth of the country. She is self-driven to the point of being eccentric and can only think about her own self. She is her only priority, her actions override concerns and interests of others, mostly always.

The plot moves ahead with Ankita having a fall on her face from the perch she was enthroning as she discovers that she suffers from bipolar-disorder. The turn her life takes catches her unguarded, as her illusions burn their way to freedom she is left with no choice but to battle for life.

Review:
Preeti Shenoy in Life is What You Make it presents a platter full of nostalgia and emotions that reflect the life of youth in contemporary India. The author tries to weave the dark and the light well without overworking the descriptions. The book can make you reminisce your past and put you in a mood of self-analysis. The protagonist's fall from grace is well described and without straying to be ambiguous.

The girl, who refrains from being compassionate and empathetic in her college days, has nature intervening with the flow of her life to make her understand the lessons of life. She is diagnosed by bipolar disorder; and is forced to evaluate her attitude towards life in order to reorganize. Her incorrigible ways of dealing with people who are close to her, makes one think and take look at one's own social behavior. Her struggle with herself in the asylum can make your heart wrench as you feel for the persons who are going through the trial of being a bipolar-disorder victim.

Life is What You Make it takes a flight as the protagonist takes her life by the hand and undergoes reformation. The author's belief in art being therapeutic is strongly underlined by the story. As she learns to look beyond her conceived self with the help of doctors a wave of positivity hits the reader. The description of her regaining control of her life as she succeeds in getting her due of sunshine makes you swell with pride and joy as the human spirit vanquishes the demons of disorder.

The author makes it very clear that art can heal; that the extent of the power of art is Divinity. Love is the nature of the Supreme Being and we all are bounded together by the same. Life is What You Make it upholds the primordial human values of love and empathy above aspirations and the beauty of the free-will that enshrines the human-experience. The power of will that is bestowed upon us can work for us and against us, and this book questions your exercising of the given authority.
